First Holy Communion: A Milestone to Remember
May is approaching, and with it comes one of the most beautiful — and honestly, one of the most intense — seasons of the year.
As a photographer, I love this time for the soft spring light and timeless elegance.
But as a parent… I see it very differently.
I understand the trembling hands when you straighten your child’s alb or veil. I recognize that sudden, quiet thought that catches you off guard:
When did they grow up so much?
The Parent’s Perspective: A Moment That Slips Away
For us as parents, First Holy Communion is a defining milestone.
It is the celebration of the First Eucharist — a sacred step that connects our child more deeply with their faith and church community. It is a spiritual moment we’ve prepared for over months of learning and reflection.
But beyond the religious meaning, it is also a major family celebration.
It’s one of those rare occasions when grandparents, godparents, and relatives gather around one table. It’s joy, pride, and a little bit of chaos all at once.
And as a mom, I know something else is true:
In the middle of organizing lunch, adjusting flower crowns, and making sure everything runs smoothly… the hardest part is simply being present.
We want to remember the sparkle in our child’s eyes.
But often, what we remember most is the stress of making sure everything goes perfectly.
Why I Love Capturing These Portraits
I love Communion sessions because they allow us to reclaim the quiet beauty of this milestone — the moments that slip through our fingers on the day of the ceremony. Because I have lived these emotions myself, I understand that a Communion portrait is not “just a photo of your child.”
It’s a keepsake for a grandmother who will lovingly place it in her wallet.
It’s an image that, years from now, will remind you how significant this day was for your family.
First Holy Communion is a foundation.
A foundation of faith.
And a foundation of family memories.
Allow me to preserve those memories in a way that will last far beyond this season.
A Small Request From Me
Please don’t be afraid to be in the photos.
I know many of you prefer to stand behind the camera. But one day, your child will look at that album — and the photo with mom and dad will be the one that matters most. These photos aren't just for your walls today; they are for your child to look back on decades from now, remembering the day they felt truly "grown up" for the first time.
Choosing Your Perfect Session Style
Every family is different, which is why I offer three unique ways to capture this milestone:
The Classic Studio Session: Timeless, elegant, and focused entirely on the child. With controlled lighting and a minimalist backdrop, we create high-end portraits that look stunning on any gallery wall.
The On-Location Plener: Whether it’s a blooming park or the steps of your parish, an outdoor session offers beautiful natural light and a sense of freedom for the child.
The In-Home Lifestyle Session: If you want a more personal touch, I can come to your home. This is perfect for capturing the child in their own environment, perhaps holding a family heirloom or a prayer book passed down through generations.
5 Tips for a Stress-Free Communion Session
I want this session to be a joyful adventure for your child, not a chore. Here is how to keep it simple:
Timing is Everything: I highly recommend a session during the "White Week" or on a separate day entirely. This means no rush and no fear of staining the clothes before the actual ceremony!
Check the "Kit" the Night Before: Ensure everything is pressed and ready. Don't forget the essentials: the rosary, the prayer book, and the commemorative candle.
Mindset Matters: Talk to your child about the session as a celebration. Avoid "smile perfectly"—my job is to find their natural spark, and your job is to be their biggest cheerleader.
The "Clean" Snack: Photo sessions can be hungry work. Have water and a mess-free snack (like crackers) on hand. A happy child is a photogenic child!
Don't Forget the Family: Even though your child is the star, please join them in front of the lens. Those photos with Mom and Dad often become the most cherished memories of all.
